In Assam, one of the suspects died in custody, allegedly trying to escape by jumping into a pond. Custodial deaths of rape suspects, while controversial, often go unchallenged due to the heinous nature of the crimes. The public's fury recalls the 2019 Hyderabad case, where four rape suspects were killed in an encounter and the police were hailed as heroes. Bengal's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, responding to mounting outrage, demanded the suspect be hanged by August 18th.
